Do I need Drug Detox|Alcohol Detox?
Alcohol Withdrawal
Withdrawal from alcohol addiction without medical management
can cause severe health problems and can be fatal. Alcohol detox is not a
treatment for alcoholism. After detoxification, other treatments must be
undergone to deal with the underlying addiction that caused the alcohol use.
Alcohol detoxification is a process by which a drinker’s system is
brought back to normal after being used to having alcohol in the body on a
continual basis. Serious alcohol addiction results in a decrease in production
of various neurotransmitters because alcohol acts to replace them.
Drug Withdrawal
Drug detoxification varies depending on the level of treatment needed
to avoid the symptoms of physical withdrawal to alcohol & other drugs.
Recovery Advocates incorporates counseling and therapy during detox to
help with the consequences of withdrawal.
Drug detoxification is used to reduce relieve withdrawal symptoms
while helping the addicted individual adjust to living without drug use; drug
detoxification is not meant to treat addiction but rather an early step in long-
term treatment.
Detoxification may be achieved drug free or may use medications like
Suboxone and Subutex (Buprenorphine) as an aspect of treatment. Usually
drug detoxification and treatment will occur over several months and takes
place in a residential rather than medical center.
Recovery Advocates offers safe and effective detoxing without pain
and discomfort.
We often come across clients who have attempted what is known
as “street detox” or “self-administered detox.” This can involve Suboxone
and/or Subutex purchased illegally. Although the effort may be earnest, the
result is usually negative. This also is seen when alcoholics attempt to stop
drinking on their own. Seizures, convulsions, pain, and despair are the usual
result and this includes the need to drink or use in order to simply maintain.
Our experience shows that detoxification needs to be closely monitored and
can sometimes take longer than a brief 30-day stay in rehab.
